Late in 1968, having reached the Semi Finals of the League Cup, Swindon were drawn against First Division Burnley for the two-legged match that would decide who would progress to Wembley. After a 2-1 win in the away leg, Swindon seemed to throw it all away at home - two goals in a two minute spell at the beginning of the second half handing the Clarets a 3-2 aggregate lead. Minutes later, John Smith was to equalise, and when extra time could not split the sides, the tie went to a third game, played at the Hawthorns a week before Christmas. In a match that reflected the topsy-turvy nature of the previous two games, the Town took the lead early on through another Smith goal, and were all set to progress until the very last minute, when David Thomas equalised for Burnley. Things got worse in the first minute of extra time, when Frank Casper put the Clarets in front, but in the last minute of the half, an own goal by Arthur Bellamy levelled the tie once more. Minutes after the restart, Peter Noble netted again, and this time it proved to be the winner - the Town going on to lift the trophy. By the mid-eighties though, both sides had plummeted to the bottom tier of the league. On March 15th 1986, seventeen years to the day after the famous League Cup final win, Swindon beat Burnley by three goals to one - and having won their previous thirteen home games, it set a new club record of fourteen consecutive home victories.
