When the originally scheduled match was postponed, Sky hastily arranged to show the Town's match at Coventry instead - but, with the Town 1-0 down, the pictures were lost with just three minutes left on the clock. Swindon travelled up to Merseyside for Mike Walker's first game in charge of the Toffees - and things look bleak when Andy Mutch is given his marching orders with the Town 2-0 down. After two wins on the bounce, Swindon travelled to Villa Park hoping to continue their revival - a goalkeeping crisis though saw Jon Sheffield make his debut for the Town on loan, becoming the first player to wear the number 40 shirt in the Premier League. A hat-trick from ex-Oxford star Dean Saunders helped Villa to a 5-0 drubbing in one of the Town's worst performances of the season - and on the way out, I was told that "that Norwegian you've got's shoite" by a home fan in his best Brummie accent.

February 25, 1994 - FA PREMIERSHIP - MANCHESTER CITY VS SWINDON TOWN
With Jan Fjortoft having scored six goals in his previous four games, the Town travelled to fellow relegation strugglers Manchester City, knowing that a victory would lift them off the bottom for the first time, and put them level on points with City who were outside the drop zone. Fjortoft again nets, and a controversial refereeing decision denies him a second, before City turn it round to win 2-1, leaving the Town rooted to the bottom of the table, where they would remain for the rest of the season. BBC Match of the Day footage, including a feature on Town boss John Gorman and City boss Brian Horton.

March 19, 1994 - FA PREMIERSHIP - SWINDON TOWN VS MANCHESTER UNITED
Yes, it really did happen - Man Utd came to Swindon for a LEAGUE game, and didn't win! A week after the Town concede seven at Newcastle, they become the only team to score four past the champions elect in the whole season - it was a feisty affair, with Luc Nijholt offering Roy Keane out, and Cantona eventually losing it with John Moncur.

3-1 down from the first leg, a first half hat-trick from Jan Fjortoft turns this Coca-Cola Second Round tie around, but the Town concede a late equaliser to take it to extra time. Then, just on the stroke of half-time, a Joey Beauchamp shot rebounds off the post, and into the net via the head keeper Andy Petterson, to secure an unlikely aggregate win for Swindon.

January 11, 1995 - COCA-COLA CUP - SWINDON TOWN VS MILLWALL
Two goals from Andy Mutch sandwich a superb strike from Jan Fjortoft - a goal that prompted Millwall manager Mick McCarthy to state that he would "bare his arse in Burton's shop window" if Fjortoft had meant it..... we're still waiting Mick! Former Town striker Dave Mitchell grabs a consolation, but it's too late to prevent Swindon's progress into the Coca-Cola Cup Semi Finals.

Despite going behind to an early goal from Alan Stubbs, two goals from Peter Thorne give the Town a 2-1 advantage to take to Burnden Park in this Coca-Cola Cup Semi Final First Leg - though not before substitute "W*nk*r" John McGinlay tangled with Mark Robinson - the Town defender's retaliation resulting in a red card and suspension for the second leg.

March 8, 1995 - COCA-COLA CUP - BOLTON WANDERERS VS SWINDON TOWN
After the originally scheduled match is postponed with the Town's supporters club coaches having reached Keele services, Swindon take a 2-1 lead for the rearranged fixture, but with a patched up defence missing Paul Bodin, Ian Culverhouse and the suspended Mark Robinson, the relegation threatened side expect an onslaught from promotion chasing Bolton. After a surprisingly tame first half, Swindon surprisingly add to their lead through Jan Fjortoft - but the goal triggers the home side to spring into action, and goals from Jason McAteer, Mixu Paatelainen and, inevitably, John McGinlay (the villain from the first leg) in the last half hour end the Town's Wembley dream. After the game, the Town fans are locked in on the away terrace, and are forced to watch the home side's celebrations, as the tannoy announcer does his best to incite a riot - thanking the Swindon team and fans for playing their part in such a great day. Until Brighton in 2004, my worst experience as a Swindon fan.

April 8, 1995 - DIVISION ONE - SWINDON TOWN VS OLDHAM ATHLETIC

September 2, 1995 - DIVISION TWO - BRENTFORD VS SWINDON TOWN
After a great start to the season, Swindon take so many fans to Griffin Park that they have to move some of the home supporters to make space - and with Shay Given making his final appearance between the sticks for the Town, goals in each half from Wayne O'Sullivan and Steve Finney send the large away contingent home happy.

After the Seagulls hit the post early on, Swindon take control - scoring three times in the first forty-five minutes for a comfortable half-time lead. October 21, 1995 - DIVISION TWO - SWINDON TOWN VS CREWE ALEXANDRA
A Crewe side that includes future Town players Ashley Westwood and Gareth Whalley - plus future Premiership stars Danny Murphy, Robbie Savage and Neil Lennon - travel to the County Ground for a top-of-the-table clash, and they look to have grabbed a point when Steve Garvey equalises with just twelve minutes remaining. On his return to the County Ground after his move back to Oxford, Joey Beauchamp receives some fearful stick from the Swindon crowd, not to mention a few bumps and bruises from his ex-team-mates. Despite a second half onslaught by the away side, a Kevin Horlock header is enough to give the Town a derby victory.

October 16, 1996 - DIVISION ONE - SWINDON TOWN VS HUDDERSFIELD TOWN
With the Town in mid-table and the Terriers in the play-off positions before the start of the game, no-one was expecting Swindon to run riot - and after the Town score four in the first half, Kevin Horlock shows he is as surprised as everyone else, pretending to faint in his goal celebration! Peter Thorne scores two more in the first three minutes of the second half, securing his hat-trick, and a convincing victory for the Town.

October 23, 1996 - COCA-COLA CUP - MANCHESTER UNITED VS SWINDON TOWN
Eight thousand Town fans travelled to Old Trafford to see this Coca-Cola Cup tie - and though Peter Thorne equalises Karel Poborsky's strike, Paul Scholes wins it for the Red Devils. The following day at work, I had the mickey taken out of me for supporting a team that lost to "Man Utd Reserves".... even though their team had six internationals playing!!

January 3, 1998 - FA CUP - SWINDON TOWN VS STEVENAGE BOROUGH
The most embarrassing result in STFC's history? With Swindon in the second tier and Boro in the Conference, the home side are the overwhelming favourites when Stevenage visit the County Ground - but despite taking an early lead with a wind assisted effort from Mark Walters, Swindon don't adapt to the conditions as well as their non-league opponents - and Boro eventually return victorious, with future Town favourite Giuliano Grazioli grabbing a winner after Fraser Digby's goal-kick barely made it out of the penalty area.

Shortly after, McMahon placed eight players on the transfer list.

When the team eventually gets into its stride, they come close to turning things around in an entertaining encounter.

September 24, 2003 - CARLING CUP - LEEDS UNITED VS SWINDON TOWN
A game that had everything - after Andy Gurney had given Swindon the lead on the stroke of half-time with a superb 30 yard free-kick, Sam Parkin doubled the lead with just sixteen minutes left on the clock after a wonderful passing move - the Town having a great chance of causing an upset at a Leeds side with thirteen current or future internationals in their squad. Ian Harte reduced the arrears just three minutes later to set up a grandstand finale, before Town keeper Bart Griemink was sent off for a second bookable offence with three minutes left remaining. Deep into injury time, Leeds threw everything forward - including the goalkeeper - and amazingly, it was England international stopper Paul Robinson who netted the equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game. Swindon's ten men held out in extra time, but eventually succumb on penalties - with two of the night's heroes, Andy Gurney and Stefani Miglioranzi missing their spot kicks in the shootout.

March 30, 2004 - DIVISION TWO - PORT VALE VS SWINDON TOWN

May 8, 2004 - DIVISION TWO - SWINDON TOWN VS HARTLEPOOL UNITED
Sitting in fifth and sixth place respectively, Swindon and Hartlepool go into the last game of the season both requiring a draw to confirm their play-off place - and though most predict a dull no-score draw, a fluke from Sammy Igoe puts the Town one up. With Swindon on top in the first half, Hartlepool come out all guns blazing for the second - when they equalise with twenty minutes remaining, the remainder of the game sees the strange sight of both sides keeping the ball to hold onto the point they both need.

After taking an early lead and then doubling it on the hour mark, the Owls appear to be coasting to victory - but an inspired change by Andy King (you couldn't say that very often...), and a superb performance by Christian Roberts spark an astounding comeback in the last twelve minutes.

After weeks of negotiations, Andrew Fitton's consortium finally takes the helm at STFC.
