An attacking midfield player originally signed on a month's loan from Reading at the end of January 2009, Robson-Kanu made his debut for the Town in a 3-2 win over Walsall a day after signing. Though obviously talented, initially Robson-Kanu frustrated the Town fans with his selfishness, often shooting for goal from range when other options were available. At the beginning of his loan period, manager Danny Wilson utilised him in his usual position on the left flank, in place of Anthony McNamee - but by the time his loan period was due to expire, he had Robson-Kanu to the right side, and brought McNamee in on the left. This move brought attacking flair to both sides - allowing the two players to swap flanks - and was first tried during the second half of a match against Scunthorpe - with the Town 2-0 down, but the visitors reduced to nine men. The system worked well, and Robson-Kanu opened his goalscoring account with a close range strike, having squandered an easier chance just minutes previously, as the Town turned the game round to win 4-2. Swindon soon agreed a deal to extend Robson-Kanu's loan for a further month, and when he notched three further goals during March, with the Town beginning to turn things around, the deal was eventually extended to the maximum ninety days. Though perhaps not fully fit, Robson-Kanu was ever-present until the end of his loan spell, his final game being the 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers at the end of April, that secured the Town's League One status.
