A youth team defender who joined from Plymouth in the summer of 2007, Tozer surprisingly made his first team debut for the Town in an unusual left back position, for the Carling Cup match with Charlton on 14th August. After making three more appearances in cup competitions - including a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match in which he scored an own goal for Cheltenham - Premier League sides were soon on the trail of the youngster, who had been signed on the recommendation of youth coach Dave Byrne, who happened to know that Tozer was not under contract at Argyle. Tozer made his league debut at the end of November, as a late substitute in a fiery encounter against Bristol Rovers, in which four men were sent off. During the following week, Tozer spent a four day trial at Everton - but after Jerel Ifil's appeal against suspension failed, Tozer was soon recalled to play in the FA Cup tie against Forest Green Rovers. Three days later, Tozer made his full league debut at Carlisle - it was not a successful introduction, as Tozer was sent off himself for a professional foul, as the Town went down 3-0. It proved to be his last action for Swindon, as Kevin Keegan's Newcastle stepped in with a bid - believed to be worth up to £1.1 million - and Tozer signed a four year deal, having made just seven senior appearances.
