John SMITH

Though he usually wore the number nine shirt, Smith was in fact a creative midfield general, providing many pinpoint passes for the Town's attackers in the late sixties and early seventies.

Before joining Swindon from Torquay for £7,000 in June 1968, Smith had been an England under-23 international. He proved to be one of the final pieces in the jigsaw of the team who won the League Cup, and gained promotion to Division Two.

Smith was instrumental in that League Cup success, playing in every match and scoring three goals en route to the final, including two in the semi final matches with Burnley.

He left the Town in June 1971, when he joined Walsall, where he later became manager.
