Jonny SMITH | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Liverpudlian winger who came through the Wrexham academy before joining Bristol City, Smith signed on loan at Town for the 2020/21 season, his fifth loan spell away from Ashton Gate. Off the back of an excellent season at Oldham in League Two, expectation was high that Smith would be a big contributor for Town. Possessed of good pace, technical skill and ball control but patchy end product and consistency, Smith was in many ways the classic lower league winger/inside forward. He got off to the perfect start in a Town shirt, scoring a tremendous solo goal in Town’s 3-1 defeat at Charlton in the League Cup. He scored again against Burton in September, but then drew a blank across his final fifteen Town appearances. Smith’s low point in a Town shirt was his dismissal at Plymouth for two first half yellow cards - the second for dissent. In January, Smith joined relegation rivals Burton Albion on a permanent transfer from Bristol City, and helped the Brewers pull clear of the relegation zone on the way to finishing 16th whilst Town were relegated.
