Tyreece SIMPSON | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A young striker signed on loan from Ipswich Town at the end of July 2021, as Town rapidly pulled together a squad capable of competing in League Two, Simpson was a talented all round sportsman, turning down an academy rugby contract at Leicester Tigers to concentrate on football at the age of sixteen, and making his first team debut for Ipswich a year later. Going into the 2021/22 season with an 19 year-old loanee with four football league appearances under his belt as the sole central striker in the squad felt like an enormous risk for Town, but a huge opportunity for the young forward. Simpson’s development over his six months was extremely impressive, starting as a bit of bulky batting ram forward but growing into an impressive all-round prospect and an ever improving eye for goal, bagging 11 goals in his 30 appearances. His rapid development was perhaps his undoing as a Town player: amid rumoured interest from higher divisions, Ipswich were keen to tie him down to a longer term contract and, seemingly as a bargaining tool, recalled him at the end of January 2022, leaving Town in the lurch and leading to another loan player, Josh Davison, replacing Simpson as Town’s singular focus point for the rest of the season.
