McGivern was Phil Brown’s first signing at Town, brought in until the end of the 2017/18 season to bolster the defensive options in the squad for a League Two playoff challenge. Able to play at left back or centre half, McGivern was restricted to second half appearances from the bench initially, but was handed his full debut against Grimsby in April 2018, as Brown made six changes with Town’s playoff challenge hanging by a thread. Paired at centre half with youth team graduate Joe Romanski, McGivern conceded the first half penalty from which Grimsby scored the only goal of the game, mathematically confirming that Town would spend another season in League Two. McGivern kept his place in the side for the final two games of the season, and was offered a new contract, but chose instead to return to Northern Ireland and the security of a three year deal with Linfield.
