Goalkeeper Matthews was in the Swindon Town academy for three and a half years, before first being called up to the first team squad towards the end of the 2018/19 season. Matthews signed a professional deal at the start of the 2019/20 season and spent the early part of the season on loan to AFC Totton and Thatcham Town. After a short spell at Melksham on loan in December 2020, Matthews was installed as the club's second choice keeper after the departure of both Matej Kovár and Joe Fryer in the January transfer window - with manager John Sheridan relying on the loan market for his first choice keeper. After Mark Travers was recalled by Bournemouth, Matthews went on to make his debut for the Town in February 2021 when emergency loan goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott pulled up injured in the warmup ahead of a crucial relegation clash with Northampton - and though the youngster conceded a soft-looking goal, he gave a decent enough performance overall, and the Town turned it around for a 2-1 win. Matthews reverted to the bench for the next match, with Connal Trueman brought in on another emergency deal, and that proved to be it for his Town career - Matthews was released at the end of his contract in June 2021, having made just the one appearance.
