Despite a period of turmoil which saw star player Matt Ritchie sold to fend off the threat of administration and boss Paolo di Canio resign as the club was going through a takeover process, a 3-1 victory at fellow promotion chasers Tranmere saw the Town go top of the League One table - with no owners, no manager, no coaching staff, senior players Darren Ward and Tommy Miller took over as joint caretaker managers. After drawing with Preston at the County Ground, the takeover was finally completed - and after consultation with the players, Ward and Miller were allowed to remain in charge for a home game against relegation threatened Bury. When the Town gave an abject performance though in a 1-0 defeat, the new owners decided they had to act quickly to bring in a new man - and after initial discussions with Arsenal legend Ian Wright, they soon decided to bring in MacDonald on a two-and-a-half-year deal - his first permanent managerial role, after assistant positions at Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland.
