Former Town defender Mel Nurse spotted Lewis playing for Welsh side Everwarm, and he signed for Swindon in October 1976 after a successful trial period at the club, though not until after he completed his apprenticeship as a bricklayer! He didn't hold down a regular first team place until 1979/1980, when he was utilised as a left or right back, and it wasn't until the following season that he took up his usual position, in the centre of defence. Unfortunately, his time in that position coincided with one of the least successful periods in the Town's history - they finished 17th in Division Three that season, and were relegated the next. Lewis left the club when his contract expired at the end of the 1982/1983 season, after manager Ken Beamish offered him lower wages, he joined Northampton on a free transfer. PLAYING RECORD:
