view Layne's match-by-match record

David LAYNE

Prolific striker, signed from Rotherham on a free transfer at the beginning of the 1959/1960 season. He was given his chance in the first team, after scoring seven goals in one Hellenic League match for the reserves - a match that earned him the nickname "Bronco".

He didn't disappoint, and he ended that first season with twenty goals from just 27 appearances, including back-to-back hat-tricks versus Shrewsbury and Southend. These goals helped him to out-score club record signing Jimmy Gauld, who was released at the end of the season.

He scored another eight goals the following season, before being allowed to join Bradford City in December 1960.
