Mattia LANZANO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Signed as a promising goalkeeper, Lanzano joined Swindon on a two-year deal after leaving Italian fourth tier side USD Gavorrana in July 2011. Intended to be first choice, he missed the start of the season having picked up an injury in a training session - so after featuring in most of the Town's pre-season campaign, he didn't made his first team debut until September, in a televised clash with top-of-the-table Rotherham in which Swindon came from behind to win 3-2. Though Lanzano kept clean sheets in the next two matches - back-to-back victories over promotion candidates Crawley and Southend - the keeper's performances were not particularly convincing, and when an awful error gifted Burton their second goal of a 2-0 defeat at the Pirelli Stadium, Lanzano was dropped back to the bench. He returned at the end of the month, when injury to Phil Smith forced him off at Macclesfield - but with Lanzano's confidence visibly lacking, when he was deemed to be at fault for goals conceded in the 3-3 draw against Hereford, boss Paolo di Canio decided to dip into the loan market, bringing in Wes Foderingham from Crystal Palace. Foderingham proved to be an inspired signing - and when Lanzano found himself as third choice keeper, he agreed a deal to terminate his contract at the end of November, only to change his mind at the last moment.
