After a long trial spell during which it appeared any deal might fall through due to the winger's wage demands, Gabilondo finally agreed a one year deal to sign for the Town in August 2011. He made his debut two days later, impressing as a second half substitute - almost finding an equaliser with a jinking run at the end of a 2-1 defeat against local rivals Oxford. Gabilondo started each of the next three games, but after being substituted in a Carling Cup tie against Southampton at the end of August, he didn't feature at all during September - amid some speculation that the 'home-grown' players rule was preventing Town boss Paolo di Canio from including him. By his own admission, Gabilondo stated that he had struggled to adapt to life in Swindon, and that he had perhaps not trained as well as some of the other players. After returning to action in early October in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Exeter, it was November before Gabilondo was seen again in League action - and after di Canio praised his "fantastic" performance in a win at Port Vale, Gabilondo was named in the sixteen right through to the turn of the year - until the arrival of Luke Rooney and Lee Holmes limited his opportunities. Not featuring at all throughout February and March, Gabilondo made just one more substitute appearance at Gillingham in April, as Swindon sealed promotion to League One despite a 3-1 defeat - and the Basque was released at the end of the season when his contract expired.
