Stephen DARBY

An England under-19 international full back signed on loan from Liverpool in March 2010 until the end of the season, as cover for Kevin Amankwaah - having made his debut for his parent club in the Champions League against Fiorentina in December 2009, Darby's first game for Swindon was in the somewhat less impressive surroundings of the Withdean Stadium in Brighton, where he helped the Town to a 1-0 win.

Darby became an important part of the side pushing for promotion over the final months of the season - perhaps surprisingly keeping Amankwaah out of the side, as manager Danny Wilson perhaps chose Darby's defensive abilities over the more attacking player. Darby kept his place for the rest of the regular season, only dropping to the bench for the first leg of the play-off semi-final against Charlton, where he appeared as a late substitute - but he was to have far more of an impact in the second leg. Starting the game on the right side of defence, he was forced further infield after captain Gordon Greer's sending off, and when the match went to penalties, it was Darby who stepped up to take the decisive final penalty - and he sent the Addicks' keeper the wrong way to seal the Town's place at Wembley.

Unfortunately for him though, Wilson preferred Amankwaah for the final, and though he did appear at Wembley as a second half substitute, he could do nothing to prevent Swindon succumbing to a 1-0 defeat.
