A midfielder signed on transfer deadline day in February 2012, for an undisclosed fee from Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Cox revealed that it was the ambition of Town boss Paolo di Canio and chairman Jeremy Wray that persuaded him to sign, before making his debut as a first half substitute in a crucial 3-0 win over Crawley, two weeks after signing. After starting the next two games against Hereford and Shrewsbury, Cox was named on the bench for the next seven matches - after that, he was a surprise omission for the rest of the season. After the Town secured promotion back to League One, Cox admitted that it was hard to involve himself in the celebrations, whilst also admitting his frustration at being left out, stating his determination to avoid becoming the club's forgotten man - but over the close season, he was named as one of three players made available for transfer, and he joined local rivals Oxford on a half-season loan deal.
