Shaun CLOSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Regularly voted one of Swindon's worst players by fans who remember his spell at the County Ground, Close was very much a squad player who, despite being a centre forward, only scored twice in a Swindon career that spanned four seasons and over fifty appearances - most of which came from the substitutes bench. His first goal for the club came in his second season, in the Rumbelows Cup - when he scored in the Town's 4-0 second leg win over Darlington, having lost the first game 3-0. Close tried to claim another of the goals - but the strike was eventually given as an own goal. Over sixteen months passed before Close's elusive second goal - a screwed effort in a 5-3 defeat at Oxford. In his final season at Swindon, Close spent the majority of the time on the bench and not coming on. He started twice in that 1992/93 season, the first in the Anglo-Italian Cup win, also at Oxford, and his final start in the 1-0 win at home to Luton Town in the closing stages of the campaign, before he was released at the end of the season.
