Signed on loan from Blackburn Rovers in early 1997, Broomes benefitted from his spell at Swindon - and after being drafted into the England U-21 set-up, he played in a 0-0 draw against Switzerland, in a match played at the County Ground. In addition to impressing in his central defensive role, Broomes scored a screamer for the Town in a good 3-1 home win against Birmingham City, and after his loan spell ended, Broomes began to break into the Blackburn first team, until Graeme Souness took over as manager.
