A Portuguese defender, Mauro Almeida mysteriously made his debut on 4th September 2006 in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match against Brentford - his signature only being announced by the club on the very same evening. It soon became apparent that he was one of three signings made by BEST Holdings - a consortium whose takeover bid for the club later collapsed. Though he made the bench once for a league game with the Town in the middle of a defensive injury crisis in December, Mauro Almeida didn't make another appearance - and when a successful takeover of the club was made in January, new supremo Andrew Fitton moved to cancel the contracts of the "Three Amigos" signed by BEST - Mauro Almeida leaving the club to join Sligo Rovers in Ireland.
