Wayne ALLISON

Many fans were not impressed when Steve McMahon spent nearly £½ million on Allison from local rivals Bristol City in July 1995 - he had a reputation as a bit of a donkey with Town fans after many derby games.

It didn't take long for "The Chief" to prove them wrong - though he missed the occasional sitter, he had a reasonable scoring ratio, but his main contribution to the team was as a powerful targetman with the ability to hold the ball up in attack. He became a firm fans' favourite, helping the Town to promotion in his first season with the club.

He played for the Town in the First Division until November 1997 - with the Bosman ruling now in effect, and with his contract up for renewal at the end of the season, hard-up Town were unable to refuse Huddersfield's £800,000 bid.
