Formed after the demise of Leeds City in 1919, Leeds United first met Swindon three years later, after being drawn together in the First Round of the FA Cup. Two goals from Harold Fleming were enough for the Town to progress in front of 16,000 fans at the County Ground. The teams didn't meet in the League for over forty more years, after the Town won promotion to Division Two for the first time - and though both matches that season were drawn, it was almost thirty years more before the Town would record their next victory against United, winning 3-2 on their way to an ill-fated promotion.

When the Town finally made it to the top flight in 1993/94, Leeds were one of the sides that inflicted the most pain - after a 3-0 defeat at Elland Road in November, the sides met again on the last day of the season in the return fixture. With the Town already relegated, United rubbed salt into the wound, winning by five goals to nil - the final goal from Chris Fairclough in the last minute being the 100th goal that Swindon had conceded in the league that season.

By the time the sides met again some nine years later, Leeds were going through severe financial difficulties and struggling in the Premiership, Swindon were pushing for promotion in the third tier. In an incredible Carling Cup match, the Town, backed by 3,000 noisy fans, took a two goal lead through a superb Andy Gurney free-kick and a well-worked Sam Parkin goal, before Irish international full-back Ian Harte reduced the arrears. With just three minutes remaining, Town keeper Bart Griemink was harshly sent-off, and though sub keeper Rhys Evans replaced midfielder Sammy Igoe, he was powerless to prevent an injury-time equaliser - bizarrely coming from the head of England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who had gone up front in a final attempt to salvage the game. It was expected that ten man Swindon would capitulate in extra time, but they held on to take the game to penalties, only for the hero from earlier, Andy Gurney, to miss the crucial spot kick and hand Leeds victory. Bizarrely, almost a year to the day later, the sides met again at the same venue in the same stage of the same competition - this time an early Michael Ricketts goal gave Leeds another undeserved victory.

After weeks of speculation in October 2006, Town manager Dennis Wise left to join Leeds after just three months in charge at the County Ground. Leaving the Town in a strong place in League One, and joining Leeds rooted to the bottom of the Championship - he was unable to prevent United's relegation as Swindon were promoted - the two sides meeting in the third tier in 2007/08, thirteen years after their last league encounter in the top flight.

Division Two - Swindon Town vs Leeds United

Swindon sign off from their only Premier season in style - conceding five goals at home to Leeds, they become the first team for thirty years to concede 100 goals in a top flight season.
FA Premiership - Swindon Town vs Leeds United

A game that had everything - after Andy Gurney had given Swindon the lead on the stroke of half-time with a superb 30 yard free-kick, Sam Parkin doubled the lead with just sixteen minutes left on the clock after a wonderful passing move - the Town having a great chance of causing an upset at a Leeds side with thirteen current or future internationals in their squad. Ian Harte reduced the arrears just three minutes later to set up a grandstand finale, before Town keeper Bart Griemink was sent off for a second bookable offence with three minutes left remaining. Deep into injury time, Leeds threw everything forward - including the goalkeeper - and amazingly, it was England international stopper Paul Robinson who netted the equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game. Swindon's ten men held out in extra time, but eventually succumb on penalties - with two of the night's heroes, Andy Gurney and Stefani Miglioranzi missing their spot kicks in the shootout.
