Swindon's first meeting with Bristol City came as long as go as 1897, when the Town joined the Western League - the match ending in a 3-3 draw, with Welsh international Grenville Morris scoring twice for the Town. That same season, City joined the Southern League as well - but were elected to the Football League three years later, after amalgamating with local Bristol side, Bedminster - who played at City's current Ashton Gate home. Though the sides met in the Western League for the last time in 1901, it would be over twenty years before the fixture was resumed, after the creation of the Football League's third tier, and City's relegation to it in 1922. Over the years, Bristol City became one of the Town's fiercest local rivals - and though both sides have more intense rivalries, the Swindon-City one probably peaked during the 1980's, not helped by the obvious Bristol bias of the regional TV coverage during the period.

On the last day of the 1986/87 season, Swindon travelled to Ashton Gate for a top-of-the-table encounter - with the Town already assured of 3rd place and a place in the play-offs, City sat in the last play-off spot, one point ahead of sixth place Notts County, and Gillingham in seventh. Though City took an early lead, Peter Coyne equalised midway through the second half - meanwhile, as Gillingham were beating Bolton 1-0, they were to snatch the final play-off position. Swindon went on to beat the Gills in the final, to seal back-to-back promotions.

City gained some sort of revenge in 2007, when another end of season encounter at Ashton Gate ended in a 1-1 draw. The result was no good for either side - whilst it ended any faint hopes that City had of making the play-offs, the draw also confirmed Swindon's relegation to League Two, who needed two wins from their last two games to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

City provided the opposition when the County Ground hosted its first match under floodlights in April 1951 - just over 3,000 fans showing up to witness a 2-1 victory for the Town, with both goals provided by William Millar.
