| Well. What a great start to the season that was.\r\n\r\nOnce again, it was a similar story to the games at the end of last season - having a good percentage of possession, not creating much, and conceding goals that could have been avoided. Too many players had off days, and with no alternatives on the bench, there wasn`t much that could be done to recify it.\r\n\r\nThe midfield were far too attack-minded, and in the first half especially, their attacking players were given too much room to run at us, which resulted in some decent opportunities for Wrexham - Evans making some good saves. He could do nothing about the goal, which was down to some bad defending from Miglioranzi, who should have cleared - the ball was squared across the goal for an easy finish for Lawrence.\r\n\r\nPrior to that, Howard had rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike from twenty yards - and to be honest, throughout the day, a long-range effort looked like the only way we were going to score. Unfortunately, Igoe, Howard and Miglioranzi all looked like they had been to the Andy Gurney School of Shooting over the summer - there were far too many poor efforts from distance. The only usual suspect not joining in was Gurney himself, who in the first half seemed intent on providing chances for Wrexham, fighting Fallon after the first goal went in (god only knows why) and in the second half, getting himself booked - which he deservedly did.\r\n\r\nOver the second half, we had much more of the possession and territorial advantage - but failed to convert it into openings. In fact, we only managed to go further behind - sitting at the other end of the pitch, I have absolutely no idea what the penalty was for - a cross came in, Evans claimed it, Smith ended up on the floor, the ref blew his whistle - then there were a few minutes with everyone looking at each other wondering what had happened... and then they took their penalty! Incidentally, Smith was poor throughout the whole game.\r\n\r\nSo, apart from Howard`s speculative effort, we only had an effort from Reeves in the first half, a opening for Parkin in the second when he should have shot but didn`t, a couple of penalty shouts which we were never going to get, and the consolation from Caton to speak of. We didn`t deserve to win the game, we didn`t deserve to lose it either - we only have ourselves to blame that we did. |
