Shameful, absolutely shameful.
Apparently every decade or so we're due to get turned over by a non-league outfit. Well, today it happened. There are no need for any ifs, buts or maybe's because we were thoroughly out-thought and out-fought by a bunch of part-timers who thoroughly deserve to progress into round 2. Even against Stevenage we could have perhaps used the wind and the rain as an excuse - not today, mind.
I've never seen us lose to a non-league before and I can tell you it hurts, it hurts a lot. Quite where this leaves Malpas's tenure as boss - god alone knows. I do, however, forsee the Brighton game as his biggest test to date and a 'must win' game at all costs. I don't care if it's just the poxy JPT, it's still a chance of wembley.
Lose this and it's game over.

To be honest, I thought the pattern of events today was so predictable, that I've come away completely unsurprised. The combination of a team that can't defend set pieces or crosses into the box, with a team that bases its whole game on getting the ball into the area.... it was always going to happen. We got exactly what we deserved.
And quite what the referee was doing in the "goal direct from a throw in" incident was anyone's guess - I can only assume that he thought Brezovan had got a touch on it.... but why would the linesman or the fourth official both standing fifty yards away have a better view than him? And why not consult the other linesman, who would have had an unobstructed view? To give it, and even go as far as getting the ball on the centre circle before changing your mind is a joke.
STFC sides always seem to struggle against non-league teams. No guts, no glory. |
